YCDC to introduce waste-to-consumer items methods to schools

The Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC) has been raising awareness about creating consumer goods from waste at basic education schools, according to Dr Aung Myint Maw, Director of the Urban Environmental Conservation and Sanitation Department under YCDC.
“The awareness workshop is conducted at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. Students learn appropriate procedures for sorting and discarding wet and dry waste when the school collects it. By following these practices, we aim to help students progress to a point where they can create consumer items from waste.
“We will then organize contests and award prizes for their efforts. The goal is to teach city residents effective waste management techniques starting in elementary schools,” said Dr Aung Myint Maw.
To participate in the competitions, students produce consumer goods such as flooring, various bags, sandals, and baskets using discarded water bottles, paper boxes, and plastic bags. The YCDC plans to conduct awareness programmes at 100 schools per year with the aim of teaching citizens how to manage waste properly. — ASH/MKKS
