Weather warnings posted on social media platforms helped prevent the crops from possible damage triggered by the untimely rain in some delta regions on 17 and 18 February 2023, a farmer of summer paddy from Mawlamyinekyun Township told the Global New Light of Myanmar (GNLM).
There is no news of crop yield loss in the township, the locals said. The heavy rain and strong wind lashed Yangon city from 3:30 pm on 16 February.
Some trees fell due to strong wind and heavy rain in some townships. There is also a weather forecast that untimely rain might happen at the end of February in some areas.
The erratic weather condition did not affect yield as the paddy harvest season has not come yet. The weather warnings helped farmers prepare for plant protection and mitigate the possible damage, especially in delta regions (Kyaunggon, and Hinthada townships). As the rainwater did not flood the field, the crop yield loss is extremely low.
As the rainwater did not drown the crops, the chilli pepper yield is expected to increase, some growers told the GNLM.
However, there is no news about crop loss in Mawgyun, Bogale and Wakema townships and Yangon markets.
Yet, fake news about crop loss might be found among local communities and can affect the price. The public needs to be aware of fake news without reliable sources. — TWA/EM
