Union Minister for International Cooperation U Ko Ko Hlaing attends the 11th Mekong-Ganga Cooperation Foreign Ministers’ Meeting via Video Conference

U Ko Ko Hlaing, Union Minister for International Cooperation attended the 11th Mekong-Ganga Cooperation Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (11th MGC FMM), which was held via video conference in the evening of 21 July 2021, from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nay Pyi Taw.
The Meeting was co-chaired by Prak Sokhonn, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Cambodia and Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Minister for External Affairs of the Republic of India. The Foreign Ministers of other MGC countries, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam, also attended the meeting.
The Ministers launched MGC Website and observed the MGC Documentary Video before the meeting.
Subsequently, the Ministers reviewed the progress made in the prioritized areas of Mekong-Ganga Cooperation, and exchanged views on future direction. The meeting also agreed to enhance cooperation between India and the Mekong countries.
In his statement, Union Minister U Ko Ko Hlaing expressed appreciation to India for providing assistance to Myanmar such as COVID-related assistance, scholarships at various fields, restoration of Pagodas affected by the earthquake at Bagan and renovation of two historic temples built by King Mindon and King Ba Gyi Taw at Bodh Gaya, granting five Quick Impact Projects (QIP) for the 2020-2021 Budget Year and the Lines of Credit extended to Myanmar.
The Union Minister highlighted the importance of closer cooperation and coordination among the MGC member countries in the area of health security.
He acknowledged that Mekong-Ganga Cooperation has been achieving several milestones during its 21-year journey of cooperation and reiterated Myanmar’s continued commitment of active cooperation under the MGC Framework.
The Meeting adopted the Joint Ministerial Statement of the 11th Mekong-Ganga Cooperation Ministerial Meeting, and noted the Progress Report on MGC Plan of Action (2019-2022) and the list of Quick Impact Projects.
Mekong-Ganga Cooperation (MGC) was formed in 2000 at Vientiane, Laos with an aim to take collective action towards inclusive regional socio-economic development and strengthening the bondage of friendship among the people of the region. The cooperation was composed of India and five Mekong countries: Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam.—MNA
