Tornado destroys more than 70 houses in Kungyangon Township, departments and associations help affected people

A tornado hit Kanyingon village and Nyaungnigon village in Yangon Region’s Kungyangon Township on early morning of 26 July, and left more than 70 houses destroyed. Government departments and social relief associations have jointly provided helps for affected people.

Two fire engines from Kungyangon Township fire station and one fire engine from Kawhmu Township fire station along with firefighters carried out search and rescue works and clearing, the Myanmar Fire Services Department issued a press release.

34 houses collapsed completely in the natural disaster and roofs of 37 houses got damaged with up to 300 people affected, said an official from Arryupala association.

“According to residents, the tornado lasted just 2-3 minutes. It swept like this within the moment. 34 houses collapsed completely and roofs of 37 houses were damaged. There are more than 300 people who were affected. It is reported that no one gets injured severely, just minor cuts and bruises. Trees that blocked on streets and fell over houses were already cleared by departments and social relief association. For those whose houses collapsed, a temporary shelter has been set up at a monastery under the management of administrative authority,” he said.

Social relief associations from Yangon Region have prepared to go to provide necessary assistances such as foods, clothes and tarpaulins for affected people. – MT/ZS
