The ginger market has improved this year and ginger farmers are doing well.
In this year, ginger trade has mainly focused on domestic market and this is the time freshly harvested gingers have been on sale in the market.
“This year’s market price is much better than previous years for farmers. The domestic ginger consumption has been still on the rise. This is time that farmers have put their harvested gingers on sale and the start of new growing season. The trading is also good this year. It is unable to export to overseas market due to transportation barrier, though we did it last year. We just transport to Yangon, Mandalay and Mawlamyine this year,” said a ginger trader from Naungtayar Township in northern Shan State.
In this year, supply has been low and it is new growing season plus some old plantations got damaged, because of it, ginger has been short.
Ginger farmers encountered loss in 2022 summer, however, the price improved again in early 2023 and the number of farmers increased back. Last year, gingers were exported to overseas countries. In 2020-21, ginger production was over 82000 tonnes.
