Buyers from Thailand and Bangladesh have even come to make purchases of Myanmar coconut inside the country through networking with local traders, according to coconut traders.

“Traders from Thailand and Bangladesh have come to local market to buy coconut. So coconut has become rare in local market as a result of high foreign demand. Coconuts are mainly produced from Ayeyawady Region as well as from Mawlamyine. Coconuts from there are also reportedly exported to overseas market,” said owner of Ma Phyu Lone coconut trading in Meiktila township.

Despite an increase in foreign demand, the coconut market still needs to rely more on domestic consumption due to rising transportation and labour charges.

“At present, the major buyer is Bangladesh, though there are Thai buyers,” he said.

A virtual meeting to present about the prospect of coconut market which has been promising as export item was held at Myanmar Trade Promotion in April.
