The Ministry of Cooperatives and Rural Development has implemented the Emerald (Mya Sein Yaung) village project, a reliable initiative aimed at benefiting rural communities and promoting socioeconomic development. Launched in the 2014-2015 financial year, this project seeks to increase financial resources in villages, foster democratic negotiation and coordination among rural residents, create employment opportunities, and raise family incomes.
Across the nation, a total of 14,668 villages in 289 townships in all regions and states have received disbursements totalling more than K490 billion. These funds have reached more than 1.4 million rural households engaged in agriculture and livestock farming. This represents the project coverage of 23.1 per cent nationwide.
The Emerald (Mya Sein Yaung) village project engages in various activities that are visible in state-owned and other private media outlets. These activities include providing loans to rural residents at favourable interest rates, undertaking development projects such as constructing rural roads, bridges, and parks, as well as cultivating manageable-scale seasonal crops to ensure food supply for the people. Additionally, the project facilitates the repayment of loans to project officials.

The Emerald (Mya Sein Yaung) village project, in conjunction with the Village Development Project and the smart village initiative, demonstrates the government’s dedication to uplifting rural communities and improving their socioeconomic conditions. These initiatives have empowered rural residents, provided financial assistance, and facilitated infrastructure development, ultimately contributing to the overall welfare and progress of the nation.

Up to now, the project fund has accrued over K248 billion in interest from disbursements. Out of this amount, more than K44.56 billion has been allocated to carrying out over 4,000 development projects across the country with the active participation of the local population. This has further solidified the Emerald (Mya Sein Yaung) village project as a dependable endeavour supported by the government.
Furthermore, the Ministry of Cooperatives and Rural Development has been implementing the Village Development Project (VDP) since the 2015-2016 financial year. Through this initiative, the project assesses the actual needs of rural communities for development endeavours, fosters public-centred initiatives, and formulates prioritized rural development plans. As a result, more than 15,000 projects have been implemented in 11,677 villages across various regions and states.
In addition to these efforts, the Emerald (Mya Sein Yaung) village project has taken the lead in establishing smart villages as part of comprehensive village development. This pilot programme commenced in the 2022-2023 financial year, and to date, 43 villages have been transformed into smart villages, showcasing the project’s commitment to innovation and progress.
