Sugar, jaggery prices hit three-year high in end-Sept

The prices of jaggery and sugar tripled on 29 September 2023 compared to those of the corresponding period in 2020.
The wholesale prices hit K3,800 per viss of sugar and K4,800-5,800 per viss of jaggery depending on producing areas, which are the all-time record high in history.
The prices stood at K840 per viss of sugar and K1,700-1,900 per viss of jaggery on 29 September 2020.
The jaggery fetched only K3,000-3,450 per viss on 17 July 2023 and the price jumped by K2,400 per viss two months later.
Jaggery from NyaungU which is whiter in appearance is highly traded in the domestic market. The one from Yesakyo is commonly used in the Dawei area, U Thein Tun, a trader told the Global New Light of Myanmar (GNLM).
The jaggery from Yesakyo fetched K1,000 higher than those from NyaungU on 28 September. The jaggery combo is K500 cheaper than the organic sugar, U Lwin Oo, a trader who sends jaggery to delta regions told the GNLM.
Jaggery combo does not give good flavour and taste like organic ones in making traditional snacks. The new jaggery flows into the market in February and March. — TWA/KK
