Shan United edged Yangon United 1-0 in the final match of the Myanmar National League Cup Tournament held at the Thuwunna Youth Training Centre in Yangon yesterday.
Shan United FC, which has dominated the local football world in recent seasons, once again won the championship title in the first competition of the new season, the MNL League Cup, making it the only team to win all domestic tournaments after turning professional.
In addition, Shan United head coach Myo Hlaing Win also won the first championship trophy with his new team, Shan United, and it was the first championship trophy for him as a professional coach.
In the final match, Yangon United used all key players except for Hein Zeya Lin, who was injured. Shan United had some changes to the starting line-up due to injuries and absent players, but essential players were included.
Even though it was a final game where two big MNL teams were meeting, they focused on making fewer mistakes.
Team Yangon struggled to score without a centre-forward player. Winger Ye Yint Aung scored the single or winning goal for Shan in the 38th minute as Yangon’s defenders hesitated to clear the ball.
Shan United had more chances to score than Yangon but managed to score only one goal. Yangon changed players in the second half and attacked high, but the Shan team was able to control the game wisely to seize the winning result.
After the match, an awarding ceremony was held. Rakhine United player Kyaw Ko Ko secured the most scoring awards and got K1 million as a cash award. Next, officials presented individual medals and cash awards of K35 million plus the Myanmar National League Cup trophy to the champion Shan United. The first runners-up, Yangon United, also garnered K20 million as a cash award and individual medals. — Ko Nyi Lay/KZL
