President U Thein Sein has received a Distinguished Honorary Patron Award of the ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organizations, officials say.
U Win Khine, Chairman of the ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organizations, presented the award to the president at the Presidential Palace here on Tuesday.
Expressing words of appreciation, President U Thein Sein said he was delighted by the federation’s recognition of Myanmar’s reforms in energy, transportation and infrastructural development.
The president stressed the laying down of policies and guidelines critical for the successful implementation of reforms in politics, economy, public affairs management and privatization.
As politics is entwined with socio-economic development, political reform is to be simultaneous with economic reform, with the president saying that emphasis is placed on rural development and poverty reduction.
Poverty still reigns in rural areas, where over 70% of the country’s population live, he stated, pointing out the importance of raising proficient engineers through engineering and technological courses as part of developing human resources.
Myanmar shares borders with China and India, which he called huge markets surrounding the country. The president noted that Myanmar, as a developing country rich in natural resources and with a large magnitude of labour, still needs technology, investment and human resources.
He requested the ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organizations to shard its technology and experience in Myanmar’s reforms in education, which he said needs upgrading and promoting in developing human resources. The Distinguished Honorary Patron. Award is of highest prestige regarded by the Association of the South-East Asian Nations.
