Preparedness key to surviving disasters

Disasters can be natural, manmade, intentional or accidental, but, regardless of the cause, all have the potential to cause damage to human life and property.
News about the plight of victims affected by recent devastating natural disasters across the world is shocking. Facing the possibility of floods, landslides, earthquakes and other natural phenomena, local communities should develop some strategies for disaster preparedness so as to ensure the best chance of survival.
It is absolutely important that victims remain calm and avoid panic in dire circumstances as much as they can, because safety and health are critical to all in the post-disaster situations. It is, however, understandable that the outbreak of a disaster is a stressful moment causing panic, fear, confusion, uncertainty and anxiety.
There can be times when water has to be released from irrigation facilities in a bid to ward off greater disasters. In this respect, government authorities should take a proactive approach to identifying the potential impact their actions might have on the people residing in the affected area.
There is no such thing as a cheap life. Every person can contribute to the betterment of society in some way or other. For unfortunate victims of any disasters, we must try to become a shoulder to cry on, if we want to turn our fragile world into a caring and humane society.
