People in Mandalay cast votes on Election Day

Eligible voters in Mandalay cast their ballots for 2020 General Election in accordance with COVID-19 guidelines yesterday. There are a total of 4,940,592 eligible voters and 5,447 polling stations in Mandalay Region, and there are a total of 1,275,370 voters and 679 polling stations in Mandalay District.
Voters, waiting early for casting votes before the polling stations were opened and abiding by COVID-19 guidelines of the Ministry of Health and Sports, cast their votes. U TheinNaing, in-charge of the Polling Station No 4 in Kana Ma Hi Ward in Chanayethazan Township, said “People waited for voting outside our polling station starting from 4 am. I want to say that people actively participate in this year’s election as over 900 out of more than 1,000elderly aged 60 and above cast advance votes”.
Ma ThandarKhaing, a first-time voter from Mahamyay Township, said “I’m happy as I freely chose and voted the party I like. I hope that the party I voted would serve better the whole public and will be elected. It is felt safe as temperatures are checked and N95 masks are distributed at the entrance of the polling station. I feel proud of being a dutiful citizen after looking at my inked little finger”.
Officials from relevant district and township election sub-commissions and the Ministry of Health and Sports also visited the polling stations, and provided necessary arrangements for casting votes in accordance with COVID-19 guidelines. After the polling stations are closed at 4pm, polling station heads and polling station staff, before the respective representatives, open the ballot boxes and recorded the ballots.
A total of 446 Hluttaw candidates of 19 parties including 16 independent candidates – 138 candidates for 28 PyithuHluttaw seats, 41 candidates for 10 AmyothaHluttaw seats, 132 candidates for Region 1 Hluttaw, 131 candidates for Region 2 Hluttaw, four candidates for Ethnic Affairs Hluttaw seat– contested in Mandalay Region. —MNA (Translated by Kyaw ZinTun)
