A joint team consisting of Thai Border Guard, the Immigration Department and the military arrested 42 Myanmar nationals who crossed the border illegally, entering Sangkhla Buri province, on 27 April 2023.

The workers in local factories who went abroad illegally to work are facing inconvenience, so they are advised to travel only through the legal route, said the people assisting in the labour affairs.
Some workers from industrial zones went to Thailand and China through illegal routes. Some were employed, some were facing difficulties depending on their contacts, and some even returned to Myanmar.
“Some are going through Illegal routes for China. Despite our warning, they are still going through this uncertain route. They also went to China, and those who were there called them back. Among the ten people who left, only two were convenient there. The remaining six are unable to leave, etc. The same is the case with Thailand. We encouraged them to go through the legal route, but they went illegally. There are some people who are convenient, but some inconvenient people have to come back. I think they got a job depending on their contacts; some are employed, but some aren’t,” a labour activist said.
It is best for those who have arrived abroad and those who are still in the country to travel through the legal route and to consider their long-term impacts, he said.
“It is the best for both those who go abroad and those who remain in the country to consider their long-term prospects. It should not be the case that they go there just because the salary is low here, and they will be in trouble when they get there,” he explained. — MT/ZN/ED
