Among different varieties of fish, fish farm owners prefer pangas catfish to breed in their farms, according to fish breeding businesses.
“Fish farms prefer pangas catfish to breed in the monsoon. Pangas catfish is the second most favourite fish of farm owners. They are sold in dried fish and raw. It is cost-effective. The most favourite fish of farm owners is rohu,” said an official from Aung Htet Kyaw fish breeding and distribution from Kayan Township.
In December 2023, pangas catfish exported from Pantanaw Township were sold well, and demand was also good in January of this year. Pantanaw is a significant exporter of pangas catfish to Yangon Region. Pangas catfish, which were caught naturally, are also exported to Yangon. From there, they are distributed to other regions and states, according to fish breeding businesses in Pantanaw Township.
The breeding of natural pangas catfish, which is a freshwater native species of Myanmar, has been thriving. It is one of the major fishes for livestock farms as well as one of the most consumed fishes in the domestic market, and selling it into dried fish is also good. — Thit Taw/ZS
