Onion prices surge again in Yangon market

The prices of raw onions rose again in the Yangon onion market on 21 and 22 December.
A total of 138,000 visses of onion entered Yangon’s Bayintnaung Commodity Warehouse on 22 December, catching good prices of the onions.
The onion price reached K5,100 per viss on 12 December, dropped to K5,000 from 14 to 16 December, and fell again to K4,800 from 18 to 19 December. But the price rose again by K300 per viss on 20 December.
Therefore, these days, the price of old onion has reached last year’s price, resulting in the price of monsoon onion rising to the highest price of the previous year. Myitha onion also rose on 21 December.
Hundreds of thousands of new onions are entering the local market these days. On 21 December, the amount of rain onions entering the Pakokku market reached 200,000 visses, and the highest price was K2,300 per viss, according to the local onion market report.
During the seven days from 14 to 22 December, 1,085,000 visses of new onions entered the Yangon market. Still, only 730,000 visses of old and new onions arrived in the Yangon market during the same seven-day period. — TWA/KZL
