Chairperson Daw Khine Khine Nwe of the Committee on Occupational Skills Standards for Manufacturing Industries has announced the successful production of skilled workers in Myanmar’s manufacturing sector, with employment opportunities being facilitated through the Mekong-Lancang Cooperation Special Fund (2021) programme.
The Mekong region encompasses countries such as Cambodia, Laos, China, Myanmar, Thailand, and Viet Nam. Within the Mekong-Lancang Cooperation, four major business sectors are highlighted: construction, manufacturing, metal and engineering, and hotels and tourism.
Daw Khine Khine Nwe elaborated, stating, “The manufacturing sector encompasses various industries, including garments, shoe and leather bag production, loom and textile manufacturing, food processing, milk and dairy product production, ceramic earthenware production, and other manufacturing activities. The Mekong-Lancang Project serves as a skill development programme, issuing skill certificates to enhance their recognition. The project covers four industries that already possess established skill standards, including the garment industry, welding, bricklaying, and electrical transmission. Training was provided to 1,000 workers to achieve skill level 1, resulting in 500 of them successfully connecting with employment opportunities. The Mekong-Lancang Cooperation Project aims to boost worker skills, increase productivity, raise per capita income, and enhance the nation’s economy. The skill recognition certificate aims to add more value.”
Furthermore, an awareness event titled “Mekong-Lancang Cooperation: Project on Promotion of the Value of the National Skills Recognition Certificate through Skills Development System,” conducted under the Mekong-Lancang Cooperation Special Fund (2021) programme, was held in Yangon Region on 25 September. The event was attended by 136 individuals, including the First Secretary of the Chinese Embassy in Myanmar, Ministry of Labour officials, representatives from various production industries such as garments, footwear, food, milk and dairy, and the Myanmar Engineer Society, proficiency test assessors, assessment center officials, and representatives from garment factories and workshops. — ASH/CT
