The Environmental Conservation Department has declared that the Air Quality Index (AQI) in various townships across the country is within acceptable levels, based on measurements taken as of December 2023.
The AQI in townships such as Dawei, Magway, Thayet, Bhamo, Hpa-an, Mawlamyine, Kyaukpyu, Taunggyi, Pathein, Botahtaung, Dagon Myothit (South), Shwepyitha, Meiktila, and Homalin is deemed satisfactory. The air quality in Myeik, Thandwe, Tachilek, Kengtung, Thakayta, Thanlyin, Hlegu, Amarapura, Kyaukse, Madaya, PyinOoLwin, Monywa, Lahe, and Ottarathiri townships is reasonably clean.
However, the AQI of Aungmyethazan Township in Mandalay Region has been identified as harmful to the well-being of vulnerable individuals.
The department uses the Environmental Perimeter Air Station (EPAS) – Haz-Scanner to regularly measure primary parameters such as Particulate Matter 2.5 (PM2.5), Particulate Matter 10 (PM10), Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2), Sulfur Dioxide (SO2), and Ozone (O3). — ASH/NT
