Union Minister for Information U Maung Maung Ohn sent a video message to the 29th World Press Freedom Day ceremony organized by Myanmar Press Council in Yangon yesterday.
In his message, the Union minister talked about the theme of World Press Freedom Day 2022: “Journalism under Digital Siege”, which highlights the digital era’s impact on freedom of expression, access to information and privacy, the safety of journalists, and adverse effects of spreading groundless information and misinformation by breaking the laws on freedom of expression and press freedom and other vital roles.
He also stressed the need to follow the proper media ethics without misusing fundamental human rights to stand as a firm fourth pillar for the public and said the State Administration Council recognized the importance of the fourth estate in the media development and the country’s growth.
He then called on the journalists to work together in their respective fields to emerge the skilled journalists for the fourth pillar under the existing laws.
