Myanmar hands over verified Bangladeshi nationals among those rescued by Myanmar Navy
1. On 8 June 2015, Myanmar officially handed over 150 persons who are verified as Bangladeshi nationals among the 200 boat people rescued by the Myanmar Navy on 21 May 2015. To officially hand over 37 persons from rest of the said boat people, the flag meeting followed by handing over ceremony was held in the afternoon of 19 June 2015, in Taung Pyo (Let We) nearby the friendship bridge between Myanmar and Bangladesh.
2. At the said event, Deputy Director U Saw Naing, Maungtaw District Immigration Officer, and acting Police Colonel Kyaw Tay Za from Myanmar and the Consul from the Bangladeshi Consulate in Sittway, the Commanding Officer of No 17 Border Guard Battalion of Cox’s Bazar, a representative from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, two representatives from the Border Guard Battalion from Bangladesh were presence as special guests and observers. U Tun Tun, Assistance Director and Deputy District Immigration Officer, handed over (37) Bangladeshi nationals to Major Inmara, Deputy Commanding Officer of No 17 Border Guard Battalion, and they proceeded to Bangladesh accordingly.
3. Myanmar and Bangladeshi authorities have continued verifying remaining (13) persons, the rest of the 200 boat people, and over 700 boat people who were rescued on 21 and 29 May 2015, respectively. They will be handed over to the country of origin after completion of the verification process.
