MoNREC Union Minister virtually attends 4th Asia Ministerial Conference on tiger conservation

Union Minister for Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation U Khin Maung Yi and officials attended the 4th Asia Ministerial Conference on tiger conservation, hosted by Malaysia, through video conference yesterday afternoon.
Initially, the host country, Minister for Malaysia’s Energy and Natural Resources and Minister for Bhutan’s Agriculture and Forestry, chairman of Global Tiger Forum (GTF) gave opening speeches while the ministers from other tiger habited countries delivered the speeches.
Then, the Union minister said that Myanmar is one of the countries that are committed to keeping tiger grazing pastures. There are four tiger habitats measuring 49,000 square kilometres (seven per cent of the country) in the country. There are two national-level arrangements – the national-level tiger conservation project and the wildlife habitation programme.
According to camera traps, the number of tigers has increased from 22 to 25. The World Bank estimates that there may be between 35 and 70 tigers in Myanmar.
As part of the tiger rehabilitation project in Southeast Asia, four activities are being carried out on a priority basis. This ministerial-level conference is aimed at promoting cooperation and strengthening the formulation of the policy on the part of national-level authorities regarding tiger conservation. Additionally, it is said that there is the belief that the common goal of conservation of tigers, their habitat and all living species can be reached through cooperation.
After that, the prime minister of Malaysia delivered the concluding remark. A joint Kuala Lumpur communiqué on tiger conservation, tiger rehabilitation project in Southeast Asia and analysis of financial resources were released.
The conference was led by the prime minister of Malaysia and other 13 tiger range countries — Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Russia, Thailand and Viet Nam. The relevant ministers and representatives attended the conference. — MNA
