With the drafting of a 10-year multi-purpose project for conserving the watershed areas around Inle Lake in Shan State, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation has taken steps to conserve the environment around the lake, which is facing degradation.
The coordination meeting on drafting the project was held at the ministry in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday, with an opening address by Union Minister for Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation U Ohn Win.
Speaking at the meeting, the Union minister stressed the need for the first 10-year project, which is planned from the 2020-2021 fiscal year to the 2029-2030 fiscal year, to link with existing environmental conservation projects of the Forest Department, such as the Myanmar Reforestation and Rehabilitation Programme and projects being implemented, together with international organizations.
The project is targeted to be carried out as a 30-year-term project, it was announced at the meeting.
The project comes after President U Win Myint’s visit to Shan State, in which he witnessed the deforestation in the watershed areas of the lake.
Officials from the departments under the ministry also discussed the project.
The meeting came to an end following concluding remarks by the Union minister. —MNA (Translated by Kyaw Zin Lin)
