According to U Kyaw Moe Tun, deputy director of the Shan State Development Department, licences are being issued for houses to operate as homestays in Kalaw, Shan State.
Currently, there are 22 homestays operating in Kalaw, with 12 of them paying taxes. “Foreigners are not allowed to stay in homestays. They are only intended for domestic travellers,” said U Kyaw Moe Tun. It is also noted that more than 80 hotels are operated under hotel and travel licences in Kalaw, Aungban, and Heho in southern Shan State. However, domestic travellers prefer joining homestays rather than in hotels and motels. — ASH/TKO
