Kawthoung border trade dips sharply in last four months

Myanmar carried out border trade worth US$35.8 million with Thailand via Kawthoung border post as of 4 March in the current financial year 2023-2024 beginning 1 April, comprising exports worth $28.138 million and imports worth $7.665 million, as per the statistics released by the Ministry of Commerce.
The trade figure dropped from $55.588 million recorded in the corresponding period last FY 2022-2023.
Kawthoung border saw fisheries exports worth $0.706 million on 7 and 8 August, while imports were valued at $0.08 million. Fisheries are the main export items at the Kawthoung border under the FOB system.
Furthermore, cashew nuts, oil palm, and various fish including small-head ribbon fish, shrimp, squid, crab and corn were primarily exported. Only charcoal powder was imported via the Kawthoung border.
Myanmar’s border trade with the neighbouring country Thailand increased to US$2.147 billion over the past four months from $1.8 billion registered in the year-ago period.
Myanmar carries out cross-border trade with Thailand via Tachilek, Myawady, Kawthoung, Myeik, Hteekhee and Mawtaung borders. The majority of the trade was conducted via the Hteekhee border. — TWA/KK
