Increased influx of freshwater fish in domestic markets during fishing ban season

Some freshwater fish arrived at the Shwe Padauk Fish Market.

According to the domestic fish market, there is a shortage of sea fish in the fishing ban season, and the supply of freshwater fish is increasing.
Data from the Myanmar Fisheries Federation (MFF) indicated that approximately 0.5 million tonnes of farmed fish are being delivered to the Baho Sanpya Fish Market and the Shwe Padauk Fish Market daily, with no significant changes in fish prices.
Due to the fishing ban, only 30 per cent of fish are allowed to be caught, causing a scarcity of sea fish in the market. However, freshwater fish such as catfish, snakehead murrel, and small catfish as well as farmed fish like rohu, gagata gagata, and mrigal carp continue to be available as usual.
During the fish breeding season, fishing activities in lakes, streams, and rivers are prohibited every year. The Department of Fisheries has reported that individuals caught violating the fishing ban in Bago Region this year have faced fines or imprisonment. — TWA/CT
