Farmers have chosen to grow more ginger due to the rising demand and the good price, according to the ginger trade market.
With higher demand, the local price of ginger can go up, they said.

“The price of Myayni brand ginger is K 2800, K 2900 or K 3000 per viss. The demand is high. We can’t definitely say about the price. It varies from year to year. We mainly grow ginger. We expect the price of ginger to rise in the next three or four months,” said a ginger farmer from Aungban township.

When the ginger price was just around K 500 a viss in 2022 summer, farmers suffered losses, but the price rose again in early 2023 and more farmers opted to grow ginger.

Myanmar exports ginger to China, Thailand, India, Bangladesh, Yemen, Indonesia Pakistan, Singapore and United Arab Emirates, according to the records from the Department of Trade.
