Free coffee seedlings to be delivered to Taninthayi Region

Officials inspect coffee seedlings to be provided FOC to the local farmers in Dawei District, Taninthayi Region.

According to Taninthayi Region Agriculture Department, a total of 800,000 coffee seedlings will be delivered free of charge within Taninthayi Region this financial year.
Approximately 400 coffee seedlings are designated to provide per acre in Dawei, Myeik, Kawthoung and Bokpyin districts free. There are over 1,000 acres of coffee plantations in Taninthayi Region for the time being and therefore, it is expected to expand up to more than 2,000 acres after this project within the region.
A total of 800,000 seedlings: 352,000 to Dawei District; 278,000 to Myeik District; 80,000 to Kawthoung District; and 90,000 to Bokebyin District respectively will be delivered. The Agriculture Department of Taninthayi Region has provided more than 400,000 coffee seedlings within Taninthayi Region in previous financial year.
Arabica highland coffee and Robusta lowland coffee are primarily grown in Myanmar. Robusta lowland coffee is grown in Taninthayi Region.
There are a total of 1,148 acres of coffee plantations in Taninthayi Region.
It is expected to have approximately 2,674 acres after delivering coffee seedlings in Taninthayi Region, from which, many job opportunities will be created for locals.
Myanmar produces from 8,000 to 10,000 tonnes of coffee annually. Seventy-five per cent of total production is exported.
This year is expected to export approximately 2,000 tonnes of coffee, according to the Myanmar Coffee Association.
Coffee produced by Myanmar fetch US$5,500-8,300 per tonne in the international market depending on quality and types.
This year, it is planned to export to the United States, Netherlands, Australia, Japan, Korea, Chinese Taipei, France, Germany, Switzerland, Thailand and China. — TWA/TMT
