Water leaks at some parts of Chindwin River embankment in Monywa in Sagaing Region and residents have built retaining wall with sand bags, a Monywa resident told the Global New Light of Myanmar (GNLM).

According to weather forecast by the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology on 11 July, Chindwin River will rise about 1-1.5ft above existing levels in Mingin, Kani and Monywa townships and fall about 12-14ft below existing levels in Kalewa, Mawlaik, Phaungpyin, Homalin and Khamti townships in second week of July.

“The embankment leaks at the opposite of Aquar Pura water supply factory at the north of Denko filling station near Tharlawady jetty. We could hold the water by building a retaining wall with sand bags. The water still flows forward,” said an official.

Respective officials and residents have cooperated in building the retaining wall at areas where leaks occurred, in an attempt to prevent from entering the river water into the town. The river embankment in Monywa is more than 8 miles long and it’s built concretely about 3 miles in the downtown. The embankment flooded in 2015 and monks, residents and officials cooperated in retaining with more than 100,000 sand bags and successfully prevented flood.
