Groundnut produced from central Myanmar has received orders from China and Yangon Region is the major buyer in domestic market, according to traders.

At present,  farmers have sold groundnuts they’ve stockpiled and the majority of orders are for making into cooking oil. Groundnut produced from Kyaukpadaung Township is the most marketable.

“Kyaukpadaung also produces peanuts for making cooking oil which is being traded well and it has high consumption. I transport to all parts of the country including Yangon. China also buys for making cooking oil,” said a trader.

The price is still steady without any noticeable change in 2024 compared to 2023.

“Last year’s peanut price and that of this year is the same. Price seems stable. Peanut is one of the items which trade is very good. Most of orders are from Yangon,” said an official from Thukha Aung wholesale trading centre from Kyaukpadaung.

The Department of Agriculture has provided supports for extending edible oil crop plantation such as groundnut, sesame and sunflower, in an effort to reduce palm oil import and ensure edible oil security for domestic consumption. According to previous statistics, total groundnut plantation acre is more than 2.82 million on average, of which, rain-fed crop is 1.61million acres and cold season crop is 1.21million acres.
