Carlsberg ‘disappointed’ at demands to recall ‘tu-poh’ beer


CARLSBERG announced yesterday that the company is disappointed that the family of the late composer Myoma Nyein still feels it is necessary to pursue legal action against its use of the phrase ‘tu-poh’ in its branding.
The statement comes after the announcement from a family of the well-known Myanmar composer that they will sue the Carlsberg Group for the latter’s failure to set a date for recalling its products bearing the phrase on its branding material for Tuborg beer in Myanmar.
“The phrase ‘tu-poh’ was used in good faith by Carlsberg, whose creative intent was to convey a message of fun and music, which is what Tuborg stands for globally,” said the statement.
In the statement, the Denmark-based Carlsberg Group operating in Myanmar said it hoped that the family would reconsider and choose to continue the dialogue with them to find a satisfactory resolution to the dispute.
Carlsberg has already announced that it will discontinue the use of the phrase in its branding material for Tuborg beer in Myanmar following an announcement from a grandson of Myoma Nyein that he will sue the Carlsberg Group for using the phrase.
The family of the late composer held its second press conference in Mandalay yesterday to make the announcement.
Myoma Nyein coined the phrase ‘tu-poh’ to represent Myanmar’s traditional Thingyan Festival. The Denmark-based Carlsberg Group operates in Myanmar through a joint venture with local partner Myanmar Golden Star. It officially opened its factory in Bago last year, where it brews Tuborg beer and its flagship product Carlsberg beer.—Aung Thant Khaing
