The Buddhist devotees held a candlelight ceremony at the Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon on eve of the end of four-month Buddhist Rain Retreat yesterday.
The pagoda was crowded with pilgrims yesterday, the first day of the three-day holiday for Thadingyut festival to mark the end of the Rain Retreat. The devotees offered flowers, fruit, water and oil lamps before images of the Buddha.
In Yangon, Buddhist devotees packed into the Sirimangala Kaba Aye Ceti (World Peace Pagoda) where candlelight offering ceremony was held, to observe the auspicious day by performing merit-making rituals.
At pagodas in Yangon yesterday, wellwishers donated charity food and water to the visitors. Religious associations chanted religious verses at the pagodas, and office buildings and parks were illuminated with multi-coloured lightings at night. People will hold candlelight offering ceremony at pagodas nationwide to mark the Full Moon Day of Thadingyut.
