Bangladesh to buy 200 tonnes of Myanmar’s onions this financial year

Bangladesh will purchase 200 tonnes of Myanmar’s onions this financial year, according to the Myanmar Trade Promotion Organization of the Ministry of Commerce.
With the increase in domestic consumption, the government of Bangladesh has decided to buy onions from neighbouring countries to reduce the increase in domestic onion prices. Thus, they will import more than twenty thousand tonnes of onions from foreign countries this financial year.
Bangladesh will buy 200 tonnes of onions from Myanmar, Daw Naw Mutaka Paw, Director-General of the Myanmar Trade Promotion Organization commented.
“Bangladesh has to buy 200 tonnes of Myanmar onions in the current financial year. When the official proposal is sent through the diplomatic channel, the two sides will negotiate until they can sign. In addition, Bangladesh prefers the quality of Myanmar rice, so they have offered to buy it again in the current financial year. They offered to purchase the rice according to the quality criteria and set the price under contract,” she added.
A total of 2025.47 tonnes of Myanmar onions were exported to Malaysia, China, Singapore, Thailand, Bangladesh, Viet Nam, India and Malaysia. Myanmar is currently exporting onions to the Philippines through the Myanmar-Philippines bilateral G-to-G system.
In Myanmar, the onion cultivation area is about 174,423 acres. Mandalay Region, which mainly grows onions, has 36 per cent of the country’s onion production, while Magway Region has 26 per cent and Sagaing Region has 32 per cent of the country’s production.
The onion production of the three regions together is 94% of the national production. — ASH/KZL
