The Bagan World Heritage Site, which won the third place in the ASEAN Smoke-Free Award, will continue to maintain its status as a smoke-free region, according to Dr Shwe Sin Htike, the secretary of the Bagan zone smoke-free supervision committee.
She also said that the committee will continue its efforts, such as awareness-raising campaigns, field monitoring activities, as well as expansion of more smoke-free areas throughout the country and those additional measures will be introduced if there is non-compliance.
“Among many smoke-free areas established in Myanmar, the Bagan World Heritage Site has been designated as a smoke-free area since 2014. Within the Bagan World Heritage Site, three zones have been set up to ensure that smoke is free. Since 2022, designated zones become completely smoke-free, so in 2024, we competed for the ASEAN Smoke-Free Award, and jointly won the bronze medal with Thailand’s Saensuk Municipality,” said Dr Shwe Sin Htike.
Iloilo City of the Philippines claimed the gold medal, whereas Bogor City of Indonesia secured the silver medal. The ASEAN Smoke-Free Award was presented in a ceremony at the 16th ASEAN Health Ministers’ Meeting held in Vientiane, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, on 8 August 2024. — ASH/TH
