2024 ISR U-18 Athletics Championship kicks off

The 2024 Inter-State and Region U-18 Athletics Championship began with an opening ceremony at Wunna Theikdi Stadium, Nay Pyi Taw, graced by State Administration Council members. Union Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs, U Min Thein Zan, declared the event open, emphasizing athletics’ role in showcasing human potential.
During the ceremony, Daw Jennifer Tin Lay donated 14 international medals to the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs’ Museum. The competition featured various events, including men’s and women’s 400 metres, 4×100-metre relay, pole vault, and more. Notable performances included Thant Zin Aung breaking the 10,000-metre walking race record with 48 minutes 48.14 seconds and Naing Lin Tun, 47 minutes 51.15 seconds and Nan Aom Seng Kham setting a new record of 36.55 metres in discus event.
The championship, running from 23 to 26 August, also includes the women’s 5,000-metre walking race, hammer throw, long jump, 800-metre, 200-metre, 400-metre hurdles, and 2,000-metre steeplechase. With 452 athletes from 30 teams, the event aims to build camaraderie and support the development of young talents. The public is welcome to enjoy competition of the athletes. — MNA/KZL
