Yezin Agricultural University in Zeyathiri Township, Nay Pyi Taw Council Area, is preparing for its centenary celebration, scheduled for December this year. The university, founded on 22 December 1924, will mark its 100th anniversary on 22 December 2024, with various preparations already underway.
“Preliminary arrangements for the centenary celebration in December are ongoing. We are constructing the Centenary Hall at the university, and a grand opening ceremony will be part of the full programme. The main celebrations will be held at the Convocation Hall,” said Dr Nay Myo Aung, Head of the Administration Department at Yezin Agricultural University.
Agricultural education at the college level in Myanmar began in 1924 with the establishment of the Agricultural College and Research Institute in Mandalay, offering a three-year diploma course. In 1938, the college became a constituent college of Rangoon University, where students who had passed the Intermediate of Science examination were admitted to the agricultural course and conferred a BSc (Agriculture) degree after two years of study. In 1947, the college was upgraded to the Faculty of Agriculture in Mandalay under the administration of Rangoon University. The two-year agricultural course was extended to three years in 1955, and a BSc (Sericulture) degree was also introduced that year. The Faculty of Agriculture was further elevated to a separate university, known as the Institute of Agriculture, in 1964.
Over the past 100 years, from 1924 to 2024, the university has awarded degrees in various agricultural disciplines: 12,983 people obtained a degree in Agricultural Science (BAgrSc), 65 people earned a postgraduate diploma (Postgrad DipAgSc), ten people received a Master of Philosophy degree (MPhil), 668 people obtained a Master of Science degree (MAgrSc), six people earned research-based doctoral degrees (PhD by Research), and 77 people were awarded doctorate degrees (PhD). — ASH/MKKS
