Kerosene lanterns have gained in popularity over recent years for use in shop decoration, said Mo Ae Narr vintage shop owner, Ko Lwin, who collects and sells kerosene lanterns.
Antique oil lanterns have become popular now in decorating at cafes, beer pubs and barbershops.
“It is mainly used for shop decoration. Some don’t use kerosene but renovate with LED decorating. I’ve collected these lanterns bought from villages in other towns such as Anya (central Myanmar),” he said.
Some buy lanterns for lighting at home and a kerosene bottle can be used for about four nights.
“It has been a long time since people no longer used kerosene lanterns, but they will become popular again in the future. Recently, people have enjoyed using antiques for decoration. These lanterns can be used for decoration as well as for lighting. The lantern market is likely to be popular again. I’ve collected more than 50 lanterns and all were sold out. At least about 30 lanterns are used in decorating depending on the size of the shop. If you have a kerosene lantern and it is no longer used, you can sell it to me and I will buy it,” said Ko Lwin. — Thit Taw/ZS/ED
