Container vessels boost Myanmar-Thai border trade

According to a news bulletin No 1/2024, container ships have initiated a new cross-border trade system for Myanmar-Thailand border trade: Yangon-Kawthoung-Ranong and Ranong-Kawthoung-Yangon.
Under such a new trading system, it allowed 15 import licences worth over US$4 million and 598 import licences worth over US$26 million until 8 July 2024.
The first cargo ship MV Beypore Sultan (Voy-24001) of Gold Shipping Agency Services Limited departed Yangon’s MIP Jetty on 30 June carrying maize and refined metal received examinations at the Kawthoung checkpoint on 8 July and proceeded to Ranong. After the loading processes, the ship departed Ranong on 10 July.
Moreover, the first cargo ship MCL 4 of Mawlamyine Century Logistics Co Ltd (MCL) departed TMT Port, Yangon, carrying maize, refined lead and clothing on 1 July, and was inspected at Kawthoung checkpoint on 5 July, and it headed to Ranong. After the loading processes at Ranong, it arrived back at the Kawthoung checkpoint on 12 July.
According to OSS, there were a total of 58 containers – 56 20-foot containers and two 40-foot containers on that vessel. The ship proceeded to Yangon from Kawthoung on 13 July, and the second ship MCL9 departed Yangon on 15 July.
