More than 500,000 pilgrims from both local and international locations visited the Shwedagon Pagoda to pay homage in June, according to U Bo Thin, a member of the Board of Trustees of the Shwedagon Pagoda.
“On regular days, nearly 20,000 pilgrims visit the Shwedagon Pagoda daily, while on weekends, the number rises to about 40,000-50,000. At least 150 foreign travellers visit each day, mostly from China, Thailand, and Vietnam,” said U Bo Thin.
“Since past ten years, we have been installing CCTV cameras to ensure that devotees can worship peacefully at the Shwedagon Pagoda. There are currently about 280 installed CCTV cameras. In 2018, we added approximately 300 more high-quality and upgraded CCTV cameras,” he added.
Due to the increasing number of pilgrims, the Shwedagon Pagoda is now open from 5 am to 9 pm to allow visitors to pay homage peacefully.
Altogether, 546,954 devotees visited Shwedagon in January, 526,883 in February, 816,454 in March, 685,503 in April, and 576,346 in May. — ASH/MKKS
