Officials from the Labour Attaché Office met Myanmar nationals who were affected by a fire that broke out in Yaowarat, Bangkok, Thailand and helped those who lost their identifications through negotiation with respective Thai officials, said the Myanmar Embassy.
The fire broke out in Bangkok’s Chinatown or Yaowarat on 6 July at about 8 pm, and houses and shops were destroyed in the fire, leaving about 120 people homeless, it said.
Among the victims, some Myanmar nationals were included. Labour Attaché (director) U Myo Min Aung from the Myanmar Labour Attaché Office and a consular officer from the Myanmar Embassy, Daw San Thit Yi, went to the Thai monastery Wat Samphanthawong Saram Worawihan which provided shelter for victims of the fire on the morning of 8 July and met Myanmar nationals.
Myanmar nationals totalling 12 – six males, five females and one child – have taken temporary shelter at the monastery. Of them, the passports and ID cards of the three were damaged in the fire. Myanmar officials negotiated with respective Thai officials for their damaged documentation in order to help them to be able to continue to work and live. Myanmar officials also provided food and other needs.
Other Myanmar nationals who missed the meeting can contact the embassy for registration if their documentation are lost or damaged in the fire, said the embassy. — MT/ZS/ED
