Jengkol beans produced from Shan State’s Hopong have received many orders from Yangon and Mandalay.
It is the beginning of jengkol bean harvest season in Hopong and price of jengkol beans produced from this township is cheaper than that of other townships. Jengkol bean is one of the most consumed foods in Myanmar and it is generally served with salty fish sauce as well as cooked in different recipes. Some enjoy it as lunch snack.

“This is jengkol bean season so many people consume it. We transport it to all regions and states which make orders to us and majority of orders are from Yangon and Mandalay,” said a businessperson who runs jengkol bean retail and wholesale trading in Hopong Township.
Jengkol trees are perennial and fruits can be harvested in about seven years. Some trees are tall about 40 ft and 5 ft in girth. Jengkol trees grow naturally or planted. — Thit Taw/ ZS/ED
