Fishing permits resume in July

According to the Department of Fisheries, after a three-month suspension of fishing permits for the spawning season, fishing permits have been re-authorized this July.
Because the spawning season was set to April, May and June, the fishing season was prohibited during the proposed period, and the fishing season is set for July.
During the non-fishing or closed season, the fishing boats were only parked in the respective ports and were continuously monitored by the relevant authorities.
Last year, the closed season in the Myanmar Sea was classified according to the type of fishing boat and was set from two to three months. The fish hatching season, which is the closed season, is set as April, May and June, and it has been carried out according to the plan to advance one month each year.
The no-fishing period and the no-fishing area in Myanmar waters have been set in 2022 under of Subsection (b) of Section 22 and Section 23, announced on 3 March 2022.
Dr Fridtjof Nansen of Norway conducted research on the existence of fish resources in the waters of Myanmar, and according to the research findings, compared to 1979-80, there was a decrease of 80 per cent in shallow water fish and 60 per cent in deep water fish.
Therefore, in order to restore and grow the diminishing fish resources, the Department of Fisheries, in cooperation with the relevant departments, has prepared the seasons of no-fishing and has monitored and controlled the fishing vessels with the Vessel Monitoring System.
In cooperation with fishing industry federations, research activities are carried out, and six places near Lampi Island in Taninthayi fishing waters have been designated as fish conservation zones.
In addition, based on information on marine biodiversity and marine ecology and the number of fish resources, officials are working to study the maximum sustainable yield (MSY) and bio-mass. — TWA/KZL
