Public hospitals in major cities offer diverse cancer treatments and tests

The Ministry of Health has reported that various cancer treatments and tests, including cancer drug injections, radiation treatment, and radioiodine administration, were provided at the General Hospitals located in Nay Pyi Taw, Yangon, Mandalay, and Taunggyi in 2023.
At Nay Pyi Taw General Hospital (1,000-bed), cancer patients received a total of 10,769 cancer drug injections and 21,226 radiation treatments. Additionally, 96 patients underwent radioactive iodine uptake tests, and 195 patients underwent SPECT/CT tests. Radiation therapy is available 24/7, including Saturdays and Sundays.
Similarly, at Yangon General Hospital, a total of 26,459 cancer drug injections and 2,494 radiation treatments were administered. Acupuncture was provided 50,275 times to 423 patients, and radioactive iodine uptake tests were conducted for 400 patients. Additionally, SPECT/CT scanning tests were performed for 2,168 patients, and 770 PET/CT scanning tests were carried out in 2023.
At Mandalay General Hospital, 25,455 cancer drug injections and 29,112 radiation treatments were administered. Radioactive iodine uptake tests were conducted for 235 patients, and 241 SPECT/CT tests were carried out.
Taunggyi Sao San Tun Hospital provided 5,801 cancer drug injections and 9,754 radiation treatments in 2023. Additionally, 7,943 cancer drug injections, 114 radioactive iodine uptake tests, and 547 SPECT/CT tests were conducted. Furthermore, at North Okkalapa General Hospital in 2024, 55 radioactive iodine uptake tests and 222 SPECT/CT tests were provided.
Cancer remains the leading cause of mortality in Myanmar, with prevalent types including oral cancer, head and neck cancer, lung cancer, uterine and cervical cancer, breast cancer, and colon cancer. — TWA/TMT
