At present, onion market has been quiet though it needs to wait and see after Thingyan, according to onion traders.

However, farmers have held a plenty of supply and the price reached high, the market has now been quiet due to transportation difficulty.

“It is not easy for onion market as long as roads have been blocked. Now the price is neither high nor low. At present, farmers have a plenty of supply. Despite the fact that, the transportation doesn’t work, so it seems farmers and traders are seeking a way how they can manage. And farmers have tried to overcome this situation. I transport to Kachin State but I have to continue holding them at home because the road has been blocked. We need to wait and see after Thingyan,” said an onion trader.

As unusual case in domestic market, onion price surged by K500 per viss in three days, from around K2600 per viss in October 2023 as a result of high demand from Bangladesh. Despite there is foreign demand, the market has been inactive currently and farmers seem to watch the market. Onion traders told the Global News Light of Myanmar that it is predicted to see a change in price in 5 days after Thingyan.

According to onion prices at Banyintnaung Commodity Wholesale Centre on 5 March, Taungdwin onion was between K1600 and K2100 per viss, Seikphyu onion was between K1600 and K2100 per viss and Myitthar onion was K1800 and K2400 per viss.
