Lawkananda Wildlife Sanctuary launches ecotourism

The Lawkananda Wildlife Sanctuary, located in NyaungU Township, Mandalay Region, has introduced nature-based tourism initiatives within the park, according to warden U Shwe Htay Aung.
The park amenities feature bungalows, palm huts, and palmwood chairs along the Ayeyawady River, offering picturesque views of the river and Mount Tantkyi. Additionally, observation platforms are set up for birdwatching, providing opportunities to spot waterfowl and wintering birds in their natural habitat.
The warden said: “Visitors can observe animals such as deer, muntjac and peacocks through our facilities. A tour of ancient pagodas in the park is also provided. Officials share information about the sanctuary and conservation efforts at the demonstration hall.”
Fauna, such as star tortoises and golden deer, alongside a rich array of flora, including 90 tree species, 160 medicinal herbs, 32 flowering plants, and five types of bamboo, shelter the sanctuary.
Established in 1995 at Thiri Pyitsaya Village, the sanctuary spans 0.47 square kilometres between Bagan and the Ayeyawady River. — ASH/NT
