Bangladesh has been purchasing coconuts, so sales and prices have been pretty good, resulting in a shortage of supply at coconut farms in Ayeyawady Region, said U Aung Kyaw Kyaw, a coconut farm owner.
Owing to purchases from foreign buyers, the price per coconut is now nearly between K800 and K900, depending on the size.
“Due to purchases from Bangladesh, coconut becomes rare. Due to high foreign demand, coconut traders give nearly K700 per one. Some even give K40-K50 more than the market price so that they can stock coconuts and resell them at K800-K900 per one when Bangladesh buyers come to purchase. Bangladesh buyers come by ship and buy approximately 200,000 coconuts,” he said.
Previously, the price of coconut was just around K300 and K400 per one, and it has been about three years since Bangladesh purchased coconut in Myanmar, and since then, the price has been getting high.
Because of the demand from foreign markets, coconuts have been rare in local markets, and consumers have to buy them at a higher price. In the Yangon market, the cost of a dried coconut is now around K1,500-K2,000, said a housewife. — MT/ZS/ED
