Efforts are underway to send Myanmar migrant workers to Middle East countries through a memorandum of understanding, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Myanmar Consul-General U Kyaw Thu Nyein in Dubai said so at the 7th Abu Dhabi Dialogue Ministerial Consultation in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, on 10 and 11 February. He attended the event at the invitation of Dr Abdulrahman Al Awar, the UAE Minister of Human Resources and Emiratization. The Myanmar Consul-General presented the ongoing plans for Myanmar migrant workers in the Middle East and negotiations on MoUs.
This year, Pakistan chaired the dialogue hosted by the UAE. The discussions focused on workers’ rights, benefits, and rules and regulations. Additionally, as guests, Canada, Cambodia, Myanmar, and Uzbekistan attended the event. In 2008, the host countries – Bahrain, Kuwait, Malaysia, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE – along with the sender countries – Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Nepal, Pakistan, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Viet Nam – organized the dialogue to discuss and cooperate on labour affairs. — ASH/NT
