According to U Tin Aung Myint, a member of the Shwemawdaw Pagoda Board of Trustees, more than 360,000 domestic pilgrims and over 10,000 foreign travellers visited the Shwemawdaw Pagoda in Bago, Bago Region, in 2023.

Comprehensive renovation work has been carried out at the Pagoda to ensure pilgrims can pay their respects with peace of mind. An escalator has been installed for elderly visitors, and the 100-year-old Kyaukpadaung Dhammayon (community hall for religious purposes) has been renovated to maintain its original form and structure.

The pagoda boasts a rich history spanning over 1,000 years. It was originally constructed by a Mon king as a place of worship for the two hairs given by the Buddha.

In 1917, an earthquake struck the pagoda, causing its banana bud to fall to the ground. Additionally, there is a bell dating back to 833, crafted during the reign of King Dhammazedi.— ASH/TMT/NN
