Five Myanmar nationals died in landslide in Malaysia

During a landslide at Cameron Highlands district in Pahang state, Malaysia, five Myanmar nationals of Chin ethnicity died.
Of five Chin ethnic people from Mindat Township who were working at a plantation field in Cameron Highlands, one died in the landslide that occurred at around 8 pm on 25 January, and four were buried alive. According to the Myanmar Social Rescue Association (Malaysia), the search is continuing.
“It is an agricultural zone in Cameron Highlands, which is the major agricultural area of Malaysia and is surrounded by mountains. Tomatoes, radishes and lettuce are planted there. The landslide happened from continual rain on the night of 25 January, and our five Myanmar nationals were dead in the incident. They all are from Chin State’s Mindat, and a family is included. Father and child from the family and two Chin ethnic workers living together with them were among the victims buried alive,” said an official from the association. Of five Chin ethnic people who died and went missing, four were men, and one was a woman. The dead have been identified as U Shing Lan Har, U Lan Haphey, Daw Om Myue, Ko Thang Maung and Ko Kee Shing Om, aged between 25 and 56.
Of these five victims, two were found on 26 January, and the rest are still being searched.
“Malaysian rescue teams have been carrying out search and rescue operations. Two dead bodies were found on 26 January, and the rest of the bodies are still being searched for,” said the official. A similar landslide occurred about six years ago in Malaysia, and during that incident, one from Magway Region and one from Chin State died, and the other two escaped.
“A similar incident once happened about six years ago. At that time, one from Magway and one Chin slept together, and they heard a loud voice, and earth fell on the roof of the house. The one from Magway fled in panic but straight towards the earth, falling, and the other two got injuries and escaped. But bodies were found about three days later,” he said. — Thit Taw/ZS/ED
