A total of 110 YBS drivers who ran red lights more than three times have been dismissed, said U Lyan Cin Mang, joint secretary of the Yangon Region Public Transport Committee (YRTC).
A driver’s job will be terminated if he causes an accident resulting in a personal death or runs the red light three times, and the above figure is the number of red light runners who have run the red light more than three times.
“A YBS driver will be dismissed if the accident results in a fatality or he has run the red light three times. A tribunal is formed for undisciplined drivers in the event of an accident or a death. Action will then be taken depending on the findings and comments of that tribunal,” he said.
Red light running is a serious traffic offence, and YBS drivers who are caught more than three times will also have their driving licences revoked.
In 2023, 22 educational sessions were held for undisciplined YBS drivers, with a total of 2,194 drivers attending.
According to the statistics from YRTC, 35 people died and 122 were injured in traffic accidents in 2023. — MT/ZN/ED
