The inauguration ceremony of Popa Mountain National Geopark signpost, an initiative for Myanmar’s first geopark, is scheduled to hold at the end of next month, according to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation (MONREC).
The signpost launching ceremony at Popa Mountain National Geopark will be held at the end of February.
The MONREC and the Myanmar Geosciences Society have been working together to establish Mt Popa area, an oasis in central Myanmar and a tourist attraction, as the national geopark of Myanmar and aim to make it a world-class UNESCO-listed geopark.
“Our ambition is to submit a proposal for UNESCO listing and become a world-class geopark. We need to have directional maps, location maps, reception desks and so on. We will have to implement them gradually depending on the available budget,” an MONREC official said.
Despite the resulting restrictions when it is designated as a geopark, this area will become crowded with travellers while it can also improve job opportunities and social-economic status of local residents.
