With an increasing number of consumers, green gram has a good demand in foreign markets, said an official from  GLC Myanmar Company.

“As farmers have shifted to growing matpe, the acreage of green gram has decreased. At that time, since China, Japan and other western countries tried to purchase it, the price of green gram kept rising. Now, we have new green gram production. Its purchasing price in our lower areas is between K 70,000, K 80,000 and K 98,000. Foreign demand is also rising,” he said.

With increasing global consumption, the annual demand of green gram in the market has gone up since 2022 and the price outlook for this year seems to be in a better condition, he added.

“Myanmar is one of the largest green gram producing countries. The price of green gram is expected to rise during 2024. A decrease in cultivating acreage is one of the reasons,” he said.

The green gram market was sluggish from June to November 2023. Farmers from Bago and Ayeyarwady regions planted only a few acres of green gram because they shifted to matpe, which has greater demand from India.
